Gorilla Trekking Safaris

Gorilla trekking is a remarkable wildlife experience that takes travellers into the misty mountain forests of Uganda and Rwanda to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Guided by experienced trackers and park rangers, visitors hike through dense forest and mountainous terrain before spending time observing a habituated gorilla family.

In Uganda, gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors-Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo-while Mgahinga forms part of the wider Virunga landscape shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Treks can take approximately 2–7 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located, with one hour allowed for observation.

In Rwanda, gorilla trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park, where visitors trek through bamboo and montane forest on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. Treks can range from relatively short walks to several hours of challenging hiking, depending on the location of the assigned gorilla family.
