Follow playful chimpanzees through their natural forest habitat.
Chimpanzee trekking is one of East Africa’s most engaging primate experiences, taking travellers deep into tropical forests to search for habituated chimpanzee communities in their natural habitat. Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania offer distinct chimpanzee experiences, from the dense forests of Kibale and Nyungwe to the remote shores of Lake Tanganyika.
In Uganda, Kibale National Park is a major chimpanzee destination, with an estimated population of more than 1,500 chimpanzees. Other opportunities are available in Budongo Forest, Kyambura Gorge and Kalinzu Forest, allowing travellers to combine chimpanzee tracking with wildlife safaris, bird watching and other primate experiences.
In Rwanda, chimpanzee trekking takes place in Nyungwe National Park, a mountainous rainforest renowned for its rich primate diversity. The experience involves walking through dense forest terrain in search of habituated chimpanzees and can be combined with the park’s other forest experiences.
